The Device That Could Stop The Next Pandemic A recent study points to a massive medical breakthrough. In 2020 we got a rude awakening when we discovered just how fragile humanity is. Despite our mind-bending technology and next-gen medicine a simple Coronavirus turned our world upside down, grinding everything to a halt, killing millions and leaving even more with long term fatigue. But this…

Twisting spacetime, or Einstein’s forgotten theory that can help solve four physics mysteries at once? A theory in which mass not only curves space-time but also twists it may explain several cosmic puzzles at once. Whether it is true, however, is unknown. To prove it, one would have to undermine the old and well-tested general theory of relativity.

Surprise: Mercury isn’t the Solar System’s hottest planet Despite being the closest planet to the Sun, Mercury “only” reaches 800 °F at its hottest. Venus is always hotter, even at night. In the grand scheme of the Solar System, the greatest source of energy by far is the Sun. While radioactivity and gravitational contraction might supply…

A revolutionary lightweight super-strong material This new material is stronger than steel and light as plastic MIT chemical engineers have created a new material that is stronger than steel and as light as plastic. The exciting new work is from the lab of Michael Strano, the Carbon P. Dubbs Professor of Chemical Engineering at MIT.
The Most Interesting Molecule You’ve Never Heard of For my anniversary, I wanted to discuss cyclooctatetraene (COT) and why it’s so goddamn fascinating To celebrate Organic Live’s successful orbit around the sun (i.e., it’s my first anniversary of writing), I thought I would go into a story about my logo — what the molecule is and why it’s my favorite. Beware though, this story involves some chemistry jargon. Do not fret! I promise I will walk you through it all in the simplest terms possible (if I don’t, let me know in the…

The true meaning of Einstein’s most famous equation: E=mc² More than any other of Einstein’s equations, E = mc² is the one that most people can name. But what does it all mean? For hundreds of years, there was an immutable law of physics that was never challenged: that in any reaction occurring in the Universe, mass was conserved. That no matter…
Mystery solved: how the Universe makes galaxies without dark matter Out of all the galaxies we know, only a few little ones are missing dark matter. At last, we finally understand why. Here’s something to ponder that might leave you scratching your head in bewilderment: a few years ago, the first galaxies without dark matter were…

Why can’t telescopes see massive black holes? Scientists think they have solved the mystery Up to now, optical telescopes could only indirectly observe black holes up to a certain size limit. The existence of the most massive black holes was only detected by gravitational wave detectors. Why can’t massive black holes be discovered with conventional methods?
Earth is the Solar System’s densest planet. It shouldn’t be. Based on the atoms that they’re made out of, the innermost planet should always be the densest. Here’s why Earth beats Mercury, hands down. When it comes to the Solar System, the elements that make up each planet are determined by how they all formed. Closest to the…

This Is Why Quantum Mechanics Isn’t Enough To Explain The Universe. Realizing that matter and energy are quantized is important, but doesn’t give you everything you need. Of all the revolutionary ideas that science has entertained, perhaps the most bizarre and counterintuitive one is the notion of quantum mechanics. Previously, scientists had assumed…

This Black Hole Paradox Should Prohibit The Most Massive Ones From Existing The ‘final parsec problem’ is still a mystery for astronomers. When it comes to black holes in the Universe, we know there are at least two major types. There are the low-mass black holes, which arise from the deaths of individual, massive stars or the mergers of two stellar remnants, like…

NASA: In 2029, a huge asteroid will fly very close to Earth and likely crash into several communications satellites. In 2029, the asteroid 99942 Apophis will be close enough to the Earth’s surface to sweep away the highest-flying satellites. According to NASA, no rock that size has ever flown closer.
